- ✓Which online degree courses are valid in India?
- ✓Are online degrees from Indian universities equal to regular degrees?
- ✓Which degrees cannot be done online in India?
You can earn a valid degree online in India, but only certain degrees, only from certain universities, and only for the session UGC has cleared. Here is the whole map on one page.
Short answer: an online degree in India is valid when a UGC-entitled university offers that exact programme in Online mode for the session you join. The degrees available online are mainly BA, B.Com, BBA, BCA, MA, M.Com, MBA, MCA, and some MSc and BSc programmes. UGC bans engineering, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, architecture and several other disciplines online, and bars M.Phil and Ph.D. Under Regulation 22 of the UGC 2020 regulations, a valid online degree is equivalent to a regular one.
- Rulebook: UGC (ODL Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, amended in 2021, 2022 and 2024
- Who may offer them: universities with a NAAC score of 3.26+ or a top-100 NIRF University rank twice in three cycles, subject to other conditions
- Where to verify: deb.ugc.ac.in, programme by programme, session by session
- Before admission: a DEB ID, made from your ABC/APAAR ID
- Exams: proctored, with the end-semester exam worth at least 70% of marks
- Value: equivalent to the conventional degree (Regulation 22)
Which online degree courses can you study in India?
The table below lists the degrees that UGC-entitled universities commonly offer online, with the number of universities offering each one in the edifyedu.in database of 143 universities. A university appearing here still needs entitlement for your specific session, which you confirm on deb.ugc.ac.in.
| Online degree | Level | Universities in our database | Usual duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBA | Postgraduate | 121 | Usually 2 years |
| BBA | Undergraduate | 80 | Usually 3 years |
| MCA | Postgraduate | 74 | Usually 2 years |
| BCA | Undergraduate | 57 | Usually 3 years |
| B.Com | Undergraduate | 57 | Usually 3 years |
| MA | Postgraduate | 52 | Usually 2 years |
| M.Com | Postgraduate | 50 | Usually 2 years |
| BA | Undergraduate | 27 | Usually 3 years |
| MSc | Postgraduate | 17 | Usually 2 years |
| BSc | Undergraduate | 2 | Usually 3 years |
Two patterns stand out. Management and computer applications dominate, because they need no lab work and UGC lets central, state and private universities run them online without a separate AICTE approval. Science degrees are scarce, because UGC does not permit online programmes that require practical or laboratory courses, which rules out most of a BSc.
Which degrees does UGC ban online?
UGC's public notice of 11 November 2024 lists the disciplines that cannot be offered in ODL or Online mode, including their allied fields. If a website offers one of these online, treat it as a warning, not an opportunity.
This answers a lot of searches directly. An "online B.Tech", "online LLB" or "online PhD" from an Indian university is not a UGC-recognised online degree. Working professionals have other routes in some of these fields, but those run under different regulators and rules, not as UGC online degrees.
Which universities are allowed to offer online degrees?
UGC ties online programmes to quality benchmarks. Under Regulation 3(B) of the 2020 regulations, a university with a NAAC score of 3.26 or above, or a top-100 rank in the NIRF University category at least twice in the three preceding cycles, may start full online programmes without prior UGC approval, as long as it meets every other condition. The May 2024 amendment confirmed these NAAC and NIRF requirements apply from the session beginning July-August 2024 onward.
Other conditions matter too. A university can only take a discipline online if it already teaches it in regular or distance mode, and UGC bars franchise arrangements, so admissions must run through the university itself. UGC then publishes, for every session, which universities are recognised or entitled and for which programmes. That list, not a brochure, is the authority.
The NAAC grade gets a university through the door. The DEB list tells you which programmes it may sell this session.
NAAC grades lapse when an accreditation cycle expires, so check the current status on naac.gov.in, and remember that every NIRF rank belongs to a category. The University category is the one this rule uses. Our explainer on NAAC and NIRF rankings covers how to read both.
Is an online degree as valid as a regular degree?
Yes, for an entitled programme. Regulation 22 says degrees and postgraduate diplomas awarded in ODL or Online mode by recognised institutions are equivalent to the corresponding conventional awards. Each degree carries a unique number and is uploaded to the National Academic Depository, which makes it verifiable by employers. Our guide on whether an online degree is valid in India covers jobs, government recruitment and higher study.
How do you check an online degree course before paying?
- Rule out fake institutions on the UGC fake universities list.
- Confirm the programme is entitled for Online mode and your session on deb.ugc.ac.in. Our step-by-step UGC-DEB approval guide shows where to look.
- Check NAAC status and validity on naac.gov.in.
- Create your DEB ID, which is mandatory for every ODL and Online admission. See our DEB ID guide.
- Read the refund clause and note the last date of admission, because UGC refund rules count days from that date.
Or skip the manual work for the universities we track: the edifyedu.in verify tool shows each university's UGC-DEB and NAAC standing on one page.
How does studying for an online degree actually work?
Teaching runs through the university's learning platform in four parts that UGC calls quadrants: video lectures, reading material, web resources, and self-assessment. The university tracks participation through its platform. Each semester ends in a proctored exam, written remotely under webcam supervision or at a test centre, and the exam carries at least 70 per cent of the marks. Our guide on how online degree exams work explains it step by step.
Online degrees run on two sessions a year, beginning in January to February or July to August. If you missed one, see how the January and July intakes work. Since 2022, UGC has also allowed an online degree alongside a regular one.
What do online degrees cost?
Fees vary widely by university and programme, and they change between intakes. We do not quote a single range here, because one number across 143 universities would mislead more than it helps. Each university page on edifyedu.in lists its published fee, and every figure there is indicative. Confirm the current fee on the university's official portal before you pay.
