CMAT gets searched a lot around January every year when registration opens, and then again when results come out. If you're trying to figure out whether it's the right exam for your MBA plan — or whether you need it at all — here's everything in one place.
What CMAT Is
CMAT stands for Common Management Admission Test. It's conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) — the same body that runs JEE and NEET — on behalf of AICTE (the All India Council for Technical Education). Unlike MAT, which runs four times a year, CMAT happens once annually, typically between January and February. There's one attempt per year, which is worth keeping in mind if you're planning around it.
The exam is computer-based (CBT) only, conducted at designated NTA centres across India. Over 70,000 candidates sit for it annually. Scores are accepted by AICTE-approved management institutes — roughly 1,000+ colleges across the country.
Eligibility
Eligibility is wide: any graduate from a UGC-recognised university, in any subject, with no minimum percentage requirement. Final-year students are allowed to apply, subject to submitting their degree proof before admission. There's no age ceiling. A commerce graduate and an engineering graduate sit the same exam under the same rules.
Exam Pattern
CMAT has four sections plus an optional fifth section (Innovation and Entrepreneurship) introduced in recent years. The four core sections are:
| Section | Questions | Max Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation | 20 | 80 |
| Logical Reasoning | 20 | 80 |
| Language Comprehension | 20 | 80 |
| General Awareness | 20 | 80 |
Total: 100 questions, 400 marks, 3 hours. Marking: +4 for correct, -1 for wrong. The optional Innovation and Entrepreneurship section adds 25 more questions (+4/-1) — some colleges consider it, some don't. Attempt it only if you're applying to colleges that weight it.
How the Score and Percentile Work
NTA releases both the raw score and a percentile. The percentile tells you what percentage of candidates scored below you. A score of 280/400 might translate to roughly the 85th percentile depending on the cohort's overall performance that year — the mapping shifts slightly each cycle.
Score cards are valid for one year. If you don't get the result you want, you wait for the next annual window — there's no second attempt in the same year, which is the biggest structural difference from MAT.
Colleges That Accept CMAT
CMAT scores are primarily used by AICTE-approved institutes. The list includes some reputable colleges — Jamnalal Bajaj (JBIMS), KJ Somaiya, Great Lakes, NL Dalmia — as well as hundreds of smaller institutes. Notably, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) do not accept CMAT; they use CAT only. CMAT is generally positioned as the second tier below CAT but above most state-level MBA entrance tests.
If you're targeting JBIMS specifically, CMAT is your primary route — they're one of the most competitive CMAT-accepting colleges and have a Mumbai domicile preference for a portion of seats.
Preparation Approach
Three months of structured preparation is generally enough for a 80–85th percentile target. Quantitative Techniques and Logical Reasoning carry the most weight in determining final scores. General Awareness is genuinely hard to cram — it rewards consistent news reading over 6+ weeks, not last-minute revision. Language Comprehension in CMAT is slightly easier than in CAT and rewards reading speed and comprehension over vocabulary tricks.
One important thing: since CMAT happens once a year, your preparation schedule needs to be pegged to the registration window, which typically opens in November for a January/February exam. Missing the window means waiting another year.
CMAT vs CAT — Which Should You Take?
If your target colleges accept both, take CAT first and CMAT as a backup. A strong CAT score opens more doors. If you're not targeting IIMs or top-tier CAT colleges and want a reasonably good campus MBA program, CMAT is a legitimate and less brutal path. The difficulty level is significantly lower than CAT, and the prep time required is shorter.
Do You Need CMAT for an Online MBA?
No. This matters because a lot of people searching for CMAT are actually planning for online MBAs. UGC-DEB approved online MBA programs — Amity, Symbiosis, JAIN, Manipal MAHE, LPU, Chandigarh University and most others — do not require CMAT or any entrance exam. They admit students based on graduation marks and a counselling process.
CMAT is an AICTE framework exam, and most online MBAs fall under the UGC-DEB framework. The two systems are largely separate. If you're interested in an online MBA, you don't need to prepare for CMAT — shortlist programs directly and apply.
CMAT is worth taking if you want a campus-based MBA at AICTE-affiliated colleges. For UGC-approved online MBA programs, no entrance exam is required at most universities. Confirm with individual universities before assuming either way.
