- ✓Which is the easiest MBA entrance exam in India?
- ✓Is CAT required for all MBA programs in India?
- ✓Can I do MBA without any entrance exam in India?
There are six main MBA entrance exams in India, and the right one depends entirely on where you're trying to get in. A lot of candidates spend months preparing for an exam they don't actually need — or take the wrong exam for their target colleges. Here's how each one works and where it fits.
The Six Exams, Side by Side
| Exam | Conducting Body | Frequency | Difficulty | Top Colleges |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAT | IIMs (rotating) | Once (Nov) | Very High | IIMs, FMS, MDI, SPJIMR |
| XAT | XLRI | Once (Jan) | High | XLRI, SP Jain, IMT, XIMB |
| CMAT | NTA | Once (Jan–Feb) | Moderate | JBIMS, KJ Somaiya, Great Lakes |
| MAT | AIMA | 4 times/year | Low–Moderate | 300+ AIMA-affiliated colleges |
| ATMA | AIMS | 5 times/year | Low–Moderate | ~800 colleges |
| GMAT | GMAC (global) | Up to 5/year | High | ISB, IIM exec, international schools |
CAT — The Most Competitive, Fewest Seats
CAT is the exam everyone talks about and the one most people don't actually need. It's conducted once a year in November by one of the IIMs on rotation. The paper has three sections — Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). 66 questions in 2 hours.
The raw score barely matters; the percentile is everything. A 99th percentile score is roughly 160/198. IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta typically require 99th+ percentile in each section. Even IIM Kozhikode or Lucknow require 95th+ overall. Total seats across all IIMs: around 5,000 for roughly 3 lakh test-takers. The odds are real.
That said — CAT scores are also accepted by 1,200+ non-IIM colleges. FMS Delhi (one of the best value MBA programs in India), MDI Gurgaon, and SPJIMR Mumbai all accept CAT. If your target is this tier and below, a 85–90th percentile CAT score opens meaningful options.
XAT — XLRI's Exam, With a Decision Making Section
XAT is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur and is used primarily by XLRI itself and a network of XAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes) colleges. The paper pattern is unusual: it includes a Decision Making section alongside Verbal and Logical Ability and Quantitative Ability. This section tests applied judgment, not textbook reasoning — preparation requires a different approach than CAT.
XLRI is genuinely excellent in HR and Business Management. If you're targeting XLRI, XAT is non-negotiable. SP Jain, IMT Ghaziabad, XIMB, and IFMR also accept XAT scores. Difficulty is comparable to CAT.
CMAT — NTA's Once-a-Year Exam
CMAT is administered by NTA for AICTE-approved colleges. One exam per year, 100 questions in 3 hours, +4/-1 marking. The paper is noticeably less difficult than CAT or XAT. JBIMS Mumbai is the most competitive CMAT-accepting college and has a Maharashtra domicile preference for a significant portion of seats. Other decent options: KJ Somaiya, Great Lakes, NL Dalmia, Welingkar.
Since it runs once a year, your preparation needs to be timed carefully — missing the registration window (typically November for a January exam) means a year's wait.
MAT — Four Windows, Most Flexible
MAT is conducted by AIMA four times a year (February, May, September, December) in both paper-based and computer-based modes. 200 questions across five sections. The scoring scale is 0–800 (four sections; the fifth, Indian and Global Environment, is typically excluded). No minimum eligibility percentage.
It's the go-to exam if you want flexibility in timing or if you're looking at colleges that don't require CAT-level scores. 300+ colleges accept MAT scores. The exam is less prestigious than CAT or XAT but significantly more accessible.
ATMA — Most Attempts Per Year
ATMA (AIMS Test for Management Admissions) is conducted by the Association of Indian Management Schools. It runs five times a year, making it the most attempt-flexible option. The paper covers Analytical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Skills, and Verbal Skills — 180 questions in 3 hours. Accepted by roughly 800 management institutes, though most of the well-known ones are regional colleges rather than national brands.
ATMA is worth considering if you've exhausted other exam windows and still want to apply for the current year's admissions, or if your target colleges specifically list it.
GMAT — For Executive and International Programs
GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is conducted by GMAC and is globally recognised. In India, it's primarily used for ISB Hyderabad and Mohali, the executive MBA programs at IIMs, and international MBA programs. GMAT Focus Edition (current format): 64 questions across three sections, 2 hours 15 minutes. Score range 205–805.
If you're a working professional with 5+ years of experience considering ISB or an international program, GMAT is your path. For a standard two-year MBA in India, it's rarely required.
Which Exam Do You Actually Need?
The answer depends on your target. Here's the practical split:
- IIMs and top CAT colleges → CAT is mandatory
- XLRI and XAMI network → XAT
- JBIMS, KJ Somaiya, Great Lakes → CMAT
- Mid-tier campus MBA, flexible timeline → MAT or ATMA
- ISB, executive MBA, international programs → GMAT
- Online MBA from UGC-DEB approved universities → No entrance exam required
That last point deserves emphasis. If you're looking at online MBA programs — Amity, Symbiosis, JAIN, Manipal MAHE, Chandigarh University, LPU, Sharda, and most others in the UGC-DEB framework — none of them require an entrance exam. Admission is based on your bachelor's degree percentage and a counselling or interview process. You don't need to prepare for MAT, CMAT, or CAT to get into a quality online MBA program.
If you're preparing for an MBA entrance exam, be clear first on which type of MBA you're targeting. Online MBA under UGC-DEB? No exam needed. Campus MBA at IIMs? CAT. AICTE-affiliated campus programs? CMAT or MAT.
