Key Highlights
  • What is the cheapest online B.Com in India?
  • Is a cheap online B.Com less valid than an expensive one?
  • Why do online B.Com fees vary so much?

Last updated 26 August 2026 by Rishi Kumar, Senior Education Researcher and Founder, EdifyEdu. Every fee below was checked against our verified university records on 26 August 2026, and universities whose fee we could not confirm to a single figure were left out rather than estimated. Accreditation reflects our NAAC and NIRF records. EdifyEdu accepts no referral commission from any university.

The same online B.Com costs Rs 12,000 at one UGC-approved university and Rs 2,94,000 at another. Both degrees are equally valid.

That is a 24 times price gap for a qualification that carries identical legal standing. This page lists what 24 universities actually charge, with the accreditation each one holds, so you can see exactly what the extra money buys and decide whether you need it.

All fees are indicative and change between intakes. The figures above reflect our verified records as of 26 August 2026 and cover the full three-year programme unless a university bills annually. Universities revise fees each admission cycle, and scholarships or early-bird discounts can move the number substantially. Confirm the current fee in writing with the university before you pay. Check the university's online-delivery approval yourself at deb.ugc.ac.in and its accreditation at naac.gov.in.

Why the Gap Is So Wide

The price difference is not a quality difference in the degree itself. It comes down to who runs the university.

State and central universities price online degrees on a public-funding basis. Gujarat University, the University of Lucknow and Aligarh Muslim University all sit under Rs 30,000 because the fee is set by policy, not by market positioning.

Open universities go lower still. IGNOU charges Rs 14,400 for the full degree, and it holds NAAC A++. For a student who needs a recognised commerce degree and nothing more, that is difficult to argue with.

Private universities build the whole operation around online delivery, so you are paying for the platform, the admissions support, the placement services and the brand. Whether that is worth three to ten times the fee depends entirely on which of those you will actually use.

Accreditation does not track price. IGNOU at Rs 14,400 holds NAAC A++. So does Manipal at Rs 2,94,000.

The Best Value Options

Three universities stand out once you weigh accreditation against fee.

IGNOU at Rs 14,400 is the outright value pick. NAAC A++, the largest open university in the country, and a degree every employer and government recruiter recognises. The trade is service: expect to manage your own study schedule and do your own follow-up.

DDU Gorakhpur at Rs 56,500 gives you a NAAC A++ state university with a CGPA of 3.78, which is higher than several private universities charging three times as much. This is the four-year B.Com Honours, so it also carries NEP credit weight.

Alagappa University at Rs 60,100 combines NAAC A++ with an NIRF University rank of 44, which very few universities in this price band can show.

What the Expensive Options Actually Give You

Paying more is not automatically wasteful. It buys specific things, and you should know which ones matter to you.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education at Rs 2,94,000 holds NIRF University rank 3, one of the highest in India, along with NAAC A++. If you plan to apply abroad or into a brand-sensitive employer, that standing is real and it is not something a Rs 14,400 degree can replicate.

NMIMS at Rs 99,000 and Amity at Rs 1,15,000 sit in the middle, both with recognised brands in corporate hiring and established online-first support.

What none of them change is the legal standing of the degree. A UGC-DEB approved online B.Com is valid for employment, for government recruitment and for postgraduate study regardless of what you paid.

GO STATE OR OPEN (RS 12K TO 84K) Budget is the main constraint and you still want strong accreditation You need the degree for an eligibility bar, a promotion or a govt application You will run your own job search and do not need placement support You plan to go on to M.Com, an MBA or a professional route like CA GO PRIVATE (RS 99K AND ABOVE) The brand carries weight in your sector or with your employer You plan to study or work abroad and want a high NIRF-ranked institution You want structured online support and responsive admissions Placement assistance is part of what you are buying

Both routes produce a UGC-DEB approved degree with identical legal standing. The difference is service, brand and ranking, not validity.

What to Check Before You Pay

Confirm UGC-DEB approval for your admission year. Entitlement is granted intake by intake, not permanently. The list at deb.ugc.ac.in is the only source that settles it.

Ask what the fee includes. Several universities quote tuition and bill examination or registration fees separately. A tuition-only quote can rise by several thousand rupees once those are added.

Check whether the price is a discounted one. Early-bird and scholarship pricing is common and often expires. Get the figure that applies to your intake in writing.

Do not pay for a specialisation you will not use. The core B.Com curriculum is largely the same everywhere. If a cheaper university teaches the same subjects, the specialisation label rarely justifies a large premium on its own.

Final Word

An online B.Com is one of the few qualifications where the cheapest option is genuinely competitive. IGNOU at Rs 14,400 carries the same NAAC A++ grade as Manipal at Rs 2,94,000, and the same legal validity.

Pay more only when you can name what the premium buys you: a NIRF rank you will actually cite, a brand your sector recognises, or support you know you will use. If you cannot name it, the state and open universities at the top of the table do the same job for a fraction of the money. Frequently Asked Questions

Gujarat University at Rs 12,000 for the full three-year degree is the cheapest verified figure in our records, followed by IGNOU at Rs 14,400 and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University at Rs 16,000. All three are UGC-DEB approved, and IGNOU holds NAAC A++. Fees change between intakes, so confirm the current figure with the university before you pay.

No. Every university in this comparison is UGC-DEB approved for online delivery, which is what establishes the degree validity for employment, government recruitment and postgraduate study. A Rs 14,400 degree from IGNOU carries the same legal standing as a Rs 2,94,000 degree. What the higher fee buys is brand, ranking and support, not validity.

Because of who runs the university. State, central and open universities price online degrees on a public-funding basis, so they land between Rs 12,000 and Rs 85,000. Private universities build their whole operation around online delivery and charge for the platform, admissions support, placement services and brand, which puts them between Rs 99,000 and Rs 2,94,000.

IGNOU at Rs 14,400 is the outright value pick given it holds NAAC A++. DDU Gorakhpur at Rs 56,500 gives you a NAAC A++ state university with a CGPA of 3.78, and Alagappa University at Rs 60,100 combines NAAC A++ with an NIRF University rank of 44, which is rare in that price band.

Three years across six semesters at every university in this comparison. DDU Gorakhpur runs a four-year B.Com Honours instead, which carries additional NEP credit weight. Most universities allow a longer maximum duration if you need to spread the programme out.

Yes, provided the university is UGC-DEB entitled for online delivery in your admission year. UGC rules treat an online degree from an entitled university as equivalent to a conventional one. Entitlement is granted intake by intake, so check the current list at deb.ugc.ac.in before you enrol rather than relying on a university claim.

Not always. Several universities quote tuition only and bill examination or registration fees separately, which can add several thousand rupees across the programme. Ask for a full fee breakdown in writing, covering tuition, registration, examination and any alumni or convocation charge, before you pay the first instalment.

Yes. A UGC-DEB approved online B.Com qualifies you for postgraduate study at recognised Indian universities on the same basis as a conventional degree. It also serves as a foundation for professional routes such as CA or CMA, though those carry their own entrance and eligibility rules.
