"Online master's" covers five different degrees in India, and they lead to very different places. Pick by the job you want next, then check the programme is entitled for your session.

Short answer: the online master's degrees available in India are mainly the MBA, MCA, MA, M.Com and MSc, offered by universities UGC has recognised or entitled for Online mode. A valid online PG degree is equivalent to a regular one under Regulation 22 of the UGC 2020 regulations, usually takes two years, and needs a bachelor's degree to enter. Since a UGC circular of 28 July 2026, a one-year online master's is also possible, but only for holders of a four-year Honours degree.

Which online master's degree should you choose?

Start with the destination, not the degree. The table below matches each online PG degree to the goal it serves best and shows how many universities in the edifyedu.in database list it.

DegreeBest suited toUniversities in our database
MBAMoving into management, a promotion that asks for a management degree, or switching function121
MCASoftware, data and IT roles, especially after a BCA or B.Sc74
MADepth in one subject, teaching, civil-service preparation, or a later research path52
M.ComAccounting, taxation and finance careers, or commerce teaching50
MScMathematics or data science, in the few universities that run it online17

Counts come from the programme lists we hold for each university on 26 October 2026. Entitlement is granted per programme and per session, so a university appearing here still needs the exact programme approved for your intake on deb.ugc.ac.in.

Fewer than people expect. Across the universities in our database, online MA programmes concentrate on a handful of humanities and social science subjects, and the online MSc is almost entirely mathematics and data science. The reason is regulatory: UGC does not allow online programmes that need practical or laboratory work, and since July 2025 it has barred allied and healthcare specialisations online.

Online PG choice is wide in management and computing, narrow in the sciences.

For the MBA, the most common specialisations in our database are Marketing (86 universities), Human Resource Management (77) and Finance (74), followed by Operations (38) and Business Analytics (26). If you are weighing an MBA against a subject master's, our online MBA eligibility guide covers the entry rules.

Who is eligible for an online master's?

The UGC (Minimum Standards of Instruction for the Grant of Undergraduate Degree and Postgraduate Degree) Regulations, 2025 set the baseline. You are eligible for a postgraduate programme after a 3-year bachelor's degree with 120 credits or a 4-year bachelor's with Honours or Honours with Research, with 160 credits.

The same regulations open up subject switching. Whatever your UG majors were, you can be admitted to a PG programme in any discipline if you qualify the national or university-level entrance examination for it. Many online programmes admit without an entrance test, though, and set their own subject and marks conditions. MBA and MCA eligibility also follows the conditions of the relevant regulator. Read each university's eligibility page, and get the conditions in writing if your degree is unusual.

Can you do a one-year online master's?

Yes, but only on one route. UGC circular F.No. 7-2/2026 (DEB-NWR), dated 28 July 2026, lets a university that is already recognised or entitled for a two-year online PG programme offer a one-year PG in the same discipline. Admission is restricted to learners who have completed a four-year Bachelor's degree with Honours. Entry rules for programmes such as MBA, MCA and PGDM still follow their regulators.

A one-year online master's is real now. It is built for four-year graduates, not as a shortcut for three-year ones.

So if you hold a three-year degree, a "one-year online MBA" offer should make you ask exactly what qualification it awards. Executive programmes and certificates exist, but they are not the one-year PG degree this circular describes. Our guide to the one-year MBA and executive MBA in India separates the options.

Is an online master's as good as a regular one?

On paper, yes. Regulation 22 of the 2020 regulations treats online PG degrees from recognised institutions as equivalent to conventional ones, and the online version carries the same total credits and minimum duration. Read is an online degree valid in India for jobs, government recruitment and higher study.

In practice, the quality gap is between universities, not between modes. Only universities that clear UGC's quality bar, a NAAC score of 3.26 or above or a top-100 NIRF University rank twice in three cycles, may start full online programmes without prior approval. Our overview of online degree courses in India explains that rule and the programmes UGC bans online.

How do you check an online master's before enrolling?

  1. Find the university and the exact programme, in Online mode, for your session on deb.ugc.ac.in. Our UGC-DEB approval guide shows where.
  2. Create your DEB ID from your ABC/APAAR ID. It is mandatory for every online admission. See our DEB ID guide.
  3. Check the exam format. The proctored end-semester exam carries at least 70 per cent of marks; see how online degree exams work.
  4. Ask for the fee in writing for your intake. Fees on edifyedu.in are indicative; confirm the current figure on the university's official portal.
