IGNOU Online Admission and Registration: The Two Portals, the Steps and the Fees

IGNOU does not have one admission form. It has two portals, one for distance learning and one for online programmes, and the form you fill depends on which mode you choose. Here is how each works, from IGNOU's own portals and its July 2026 prospectus.

Short answer: Apply for a distance (ODL) programme at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in and for an online programme at ignouiop.samarth.edu.in. Register with your email, log in again, fill the form, upload a photo, signature and documents, then pay by card or net banking. IGNOU admits in January and July. On 27 October 2026 both portals showed the July 2026 registration as closed.

Which IGNOU portal should you use?

The mode decides the portal. An MBA in ODL mode and the MBAOL in online mode are separate programmes with separate forms, even though IGNOU lists the same eligibility and fee for both.

The online portal carries a plain warning: enrol only if you have a computer, internet access and are comfortable learning online, because it sends no printed study material. If that does not suit you, IGNOU points you to the ODL portal instead.

Same university, same degree name, two different forms. Choose the mode before you register.

How to fill the IGNOU admission form, step by step

IGNOU's admission FAQ sets out the same stages on both portals:

1. Open the portal for your mode and complete the registration. It creates your username and password and sends them by SMS and email.
2. Log in again with that username and password.
3. Fill the admission form for your programme.
4. Upload a recent passport-size photograph, up to 100 KB in JPG.
5. Upload your specimen signature, up to 100 KB in JPG.
6. Upload scanned copies of your documents, each up to 200 KB in JPG or PDF.
7. Read the instructions and tick the declaration box.
8. Preview your data and confirm it.
9. Pay the fee by credit card, debit card or net banking.
10. Download the submitted form and keep a copy.

The portal saves your data at the end of each stage. If the power or connection fails mid-stage, log in again and restart from that stage. Registration needs an email address, so set one up before you start.

What does IGNOU charge at admission?

The programme fee is only part of the payment. The July 2026 prospectus adds a non-refundable registration fee and a university development fee at the time of admission. Check the summary table in the prospectus for the exact amounts for your programme.

For the MBA, IGNOU lists Rs 16,000 for semesters 1, 2 and 4 and Rs 18,000 for semester 3, which carries an 8-credit project. That totals Rs 66,000 in programme fee, paid semester by semester. Our IGNOU MBA page sets it beside the other programmes we track.

Two schemes can lower the bill. IGNOU gives a 15 percent concession on the programme fee to learners who choose digital study material instead of printed books. It also exempts eligible SC and ST students from the programme fee for one programme. That exemption does not cover the registration, development or exam fees.

Who can apply for the IGNOU MBA?

The prospectus lists a bachelor degree of at least three years with 50 percent marks, or 45 percent for reserved categories. It lists no entrance test for the MBA. Admission runs in both the January and July cycles.

What happens after you submit?

IGNOU staff check each form against the eligibility rules. If something is missing, IGNOU writes to your registered email. Once your form clears, IGNOU confirms the admission and allots your study centre.

IGNOU processes forms region by region, first come first served. So the wait for confirmation depends on how many people applied through your Regional Centre.

Payment deducted but no confirmation?

Do not pay again. IGNOU asks you to email [email protected] with the control number, your name, the programme, your mobile number and the amount paid. The Centralised Student Registration Cell is on 011-29571528. If that does not resolve it, raise a grievance on iGRAM at igram.ignou.ac.in.

Can you cancel and get a refund?

Partly. The registration fee is non-refundable, and IGNOU never refunds a re-registration fee. For cancelling an admission, the prospectus applies IGNOU's refund notification dated 12 February 2025. If IGNOU itself denies you admission, it refunds the programme fee less any processing fee to the account you paid from.

Is an IGNOU degree valid?

Yes. IGNOU is a central open university set up by an Act of Parliament in 1985. UGC exempted it from the UGC ODL and Online Regulations by letters dated 9 August 2019 and 17 March 2020, and its prospectus states that its programmes are at par with those UGC-DEB approves. Can you study two programmes at once?

IGNOU's online portal allows a student enrolled in a programme of a year or longer to add a six-month certificate at the same time. It will not adjust clashing counselling or exam dates. Our guide to UGC rules on two degrees at once covers the wider position.

How to re-register for the next semester

Re-registration moves you into the next semester or year. Submit it online at onlinerr.ignou.ac.in in each January and July cycle, within IGNOU's schedule. The fee is never refunded, so check the programme and semester before you pay.
