Search for "online LLB" and you will find course pages, fee tables and even "UGC-approved" labels. UGC's own notice says law cannot be taught online or by distance at all. Here is the rule, and what to do if you want law while working.

Short answer: An online or distance LLB or LLM from an Indian university is not valid. UGC's public notice F.No. 1-34/2024 (DEB-I) of 11 November 2024 lists Law, including its allied domains, among the disciplines prohibited in Open and Distance Learning and Online mode. Because a university cannot be entitled for a prohibited programme, any "UGC-approved online LLM" listing is wrong. Law degrees in India come through regular, in-person programmes.

Online law degree rules in one box (last verified 27 October 2026)
  • Online or distance LLB: prohibited (UGC notice F.No. 1-34/2024 (DEB-I), para 6(ix))
  • Online or distance LLM: prohibited; the ban covers law "including their allied domains"
  • UGC-DEB entitlement list, August 2026: no Master of Laws or Bachelor of Laws programme named
  • Foreign law qualifications: outside the UGC equivalence route (Equivalence Regulations 2025, Reg 1(2))
  • Valid route for a law degree: a regular, in-person programme

What does the UGC notice say about law?

On 11 November 2024, UGC issued a public notice of precautions for students before enrolling in ODL or online programmes. Paragraph 6 lists the disciplines, "including their allied domains", that are prohibited in ODL and Online mode. Law is item (ix), alongside Engineering, Medical, Pharmacy, Nursing and Architecture.

The same paragraph closes with a catch-all: any programme that a statutory or regulatory body or council does not permit through ODL or online mode is also prohibited. So the ban does not depend on the word "online" in a course title. A distance LLB, a "blended" LLB with online teaching and an online LLM all fall within it.

If UGC prohibits a discipline online, no university can be approved to teach it online. There is nothing to check beyond that.

Is there any UGC-approved online LLM?

No. We checked the UGC-DEB recognition list of August 2026 for any Bachelor of Laws or Master of Laws entry and found none. Some websites, including an earlier version of our own LLM guide, have listed "online LLM" programmes with fees. Those listings do not survive a check against UGC's prohibited list.

Take one example that circulates widely, an "NMIMS online LLM". The August 2026 list names four online programmes for NMIMS: BBA, B.Com, MBA and MBA (Working Executive). None is in law. You can see what each university is entitled for on our NMIMS online page and on deb.ugc.ac.in.

A "certificate in law" is not a law degree. Short online courses in subjects such as cyber law or contract drafting may exist, but they are not an LLB or LLM, and UGC-DEB entitlement does not cover them as degrees. Ask exactly what qualification you will receive.

Can you become an advocate through an online degree?

No. Since no Indian university can award a valid online or distance LLB, there is no online path to enrolment as an advocate. If you are working and want to practise law, plan for a regular LLB, and check its approval before you apply.

What about a foreign online law degree?

Foreign qualifications usually go through the UGC (Recognition and Grant of Equivalence to Qualifications obtained from Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2025. Regulation 1(2) says these do not apply to professional qualifications in disciplines such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law and Architecture, which statutory councils regulate. So a foreign online law degree does not get a UGC equivalence certificate, and you should ask the relevant council or employer what it accepts before you enrol.

What working professionals can do instead

  • Study law in regular mode. This is the only route to a valid LLB or LLM. Our LLM course guide covers duration and entrance exams.
  • Take a management or commerce degree with law papers. Many UGC-entitled online MBA, BBA and B.Com programmes include business or corporate law subjects. They are not law degrees, but they are valid. Our guide to online master's and PG courses lists what is permitted.
  • Check every claim at the source. Our UGC-DEB approval guide shows how to read the entitlement list, and the UGC fake universities list tells you which institutions to avoid outright.

Law is one of several disciplines UGC keeps out of online mode. The online PhD rules work the same way, and our guide to online degree courses in India covers the full prohibited list. You can also compare universities side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. UGC public notice F.No. 1-34/2024 (DEB-I) of 11 November 2024 lists Law, including its allied domains, among the disciplines prohibited in Open and Distance Learning and Online mode. No university can be entitled to offer an LLB online or by distance.

No. The prohibition covers law programmes and their allied domains at every level the ODL and Online regulations cover, so it includes the LLM. The August 2026 UGC-DEB recognition list does not name any Master of Laws programme.

No Indian university can award a valid online or distance LLB, so there is no online route to enrolment as an advocate. Law degrees for practice come through regular, in-person programmes.

Not according to UGC. Law is on the prohibited list for ODL and online mode, and a university cannot be entitled for a prohibited programme. Check any claim against the entitlement list on deb.ugc.ac.in before you pay.

Not through the UGC equivalence route. The UGC Equivalence Regulations, 2025 do not apply to professional qualifications in Law, which statutory councils regulate.

UGC-entitled online MBA, BBA and B.Com programmes often include business and corporate law papers, but they are management or commerce degrees, not law degrees. For a law degree, the route is a regular programme.
