- ✓How many IIMs are there in India in 2026?
- ✓What does BLACKI mean for IIMs?
Last updated 14 May 2026 by Rishi Kumar, Senior Education Researcher and Founder, EdifyEdu. Ranking and fee data sourced from NIRF 2025 Management list at nirfindia.org, individual IIM admission pages, and 2024-25 placement reports.
Every "IIM ranking" article gives you the NIRF list and stops. That is not the useful question. The useful questions are: which IIM is strongest for your specific career goal, what does it cost, and is a Baby IIM still worth the investment compared to a top private MBA. This guide answers all three with the 2026 NIRF Management data, sector specialisation analysis, and the tier-by-tier ROI math nobody publishes.
Written for: CAT aspirants choosing between IIM preferences, applicants comparing IIMs against ISB or top private MBAs, and family decision-makers evaluating IIM ROI.
The 4 IIM Tiers Most Articles Mash Together
The 21 IIMs are not a single cohort. They split into 4 tiers with sharply different fees, cutoffs, and outcomes.
| Tier | IIMs | Established | Approx PGP fee (2 years) | Median package range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1: The Big 3 | IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta | 1961, 1973, 1973 | Rs 24 to 30 lakh | Rs 28 to 35 LPA |
| Tier 2: Old IIMs (BLACKI minus Big 3) | IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore | 1984, 1996, 1996 | Rs 20 to 27 lakh | Rs 22 to 30 LPA |
| Tier 3: New IIMs | Shillong, Rohtak, Ranchi, Raipur, Tiruchirappalli, Udaipur, Kashipur, Visakhapatnam | 2007 to 2015 | Rs 15 to 22 lakh | Rs 18 to 26 LPA |
| Tier 4: Baby IIMs and newest | Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Nagpur, Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Mumbai (NITIE) | 2015 onwards | Rs 14 to 20 lakh | Rs 14 to 22 LPA |
Takeaway: NIRF rank is a continuum within each tier. Pick the tier you can target (based on CAT score), then the IIM within the tier that matches your sector.

Sector-by-Sector IIM Recommendation Matrix
Rankings are aggregate. Sector specialisation is what actually decides your post-MBA career. Recommended IIM by target sector.
| Target sector | Best IIM | Backup IIM | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Management consulting (MBB) | IIM Ahmedabad | IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore | Strongest McKinsey, BCG, Bain recruitment |
| Investment banking | IIM Calcutta | IIM Ahmedabad | Finance-focused curriculum, IB recruiter access |

Baby IIM vs Top Private MBA: The Honest ROI Math
Common dilemma: an applicant has a CAT score that gets them into a Baby IIM but also has admit offers from KJ Somaiya, Great Lakes, IFIM, or similar tier-2 private MBAs. Which is the better pick?
| Factor | Baby IIM (Sambalpur, Bodh Gaya, Sirmaur) | Top Tier-2 Private (KJ Somaiya, Great Lakes) |
|---|---|---|
| 2-year fee | Rs 14 to 18 lakh | Rs 12 to 18 lakh |
| Median placement | Rs 14 to 18 LPA | Rs 10 to 16 LPA |
| Brand on CV | IIM brand (universally recognised) | Strong regional brand, weaker pan-India |
| Top decile salary | Rs 25 to 35 LPA | Rs 20 to 28 LPA |
| Recruiter access | IIM common recruitment process | Independent placement, varies |
| Year-10 ceiling | Rs 40 to 60 LPA average | Rs 30 to 45 LPA average |
The IIM brand carries significant compounding value over 10 years even at the Baby IIM tier. For most candidates with the choice, the Baby IIM is the better long-term ROI.
IIM CAT Cutoff Expectations by Tier 2026
- Big 3 (IIMA, IIMB, IIMC): 99-plus overall CAT, 99-plus each section, strong academic record (10th, 12th, graduation 80-plus percent).
- Old IIMs (Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore): 97 to 99 overall, 95-plus each section.
- New IIMs (Shillong, Rohtak, Ranchi, Raipur, Tiruchi, Udaipur, Kashipur, Visakhapatnam): 92 to 96 overall, 85-plus each section.
- Baby IIMs (Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Nagpur, Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Mumbai): 88 to 92 overall, 80-plus each section.
Final selection also factors in academic record, work experience, gender diversity, and academic discipline diversity. CAT score alone does not decide admission.
What IIM Ranking Does NOT Tell You
Four factors NIRF aggregate ranking cannot capture.
- Sector specialisation strength. IIMC ranks lower than IIMA on NIRF but is the stronger pick for finance. IIMB outperforms IIMA for tech.
- Regional alumni network. IIMK has strongest South India network. IIMI has strongest Maharashtra-MP-Gujarat network. NIRF does not measure geographic reach.
- Programme-specific reputation. IIMB EPGP Executive MBA outperforms IIMB PGP at senior-cohort employers. The PGP rank does not transfer cleanly to Executive.
- Faculty turnover and recent quality. NIRF lags real-time faculty changes by 2 to 3 years. Top faculty leaving for international roles affects future cohorts, not the published rank.
The Online MBA Alternative for Those Who Cannot Get into IIM
For CAT scorers below 88 percentile or working professionals who cannot pause for 2-year residential, a UGC-DEB approved online MBA from a NAAC A or A-plus university is the practical alternative.
| University | NAAC | NIRF Mgmt | Total fee | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NMIMS Online | A++ | 24 | Rs 1.96L to 2.20L | BFSI working professional |
| JAIN Online | A++ | 73 | Rs 1.60L to 1.96L | Bengaluru tech alternative |
| Amity Online | A+ | 49 | Rs 2.07L to 2.25L | Pan-India brand, 19 specs |
| Manipal University Jaipur Online | A+ | 81 | Rs 1.53L to 1.80L | Affordable NAAC A+ |
CAT 2026 Preparation Strategy by Target IIM Tier
| Target IIM tier | Required CAT percentile | Daily prep hours | Realistic prep timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big 3 (IIMA, IIMB, IIMC) | 99-plus overall, 99-plus each section | 5 to 6 hours | 12 to 18 months serious prep |
| Old IIMs (L, K, I) | 97 to 99 overall | 4 to 5 hours | 10 to 15 months |
| New IIMs | 92 to 96 overall | 3 to 4 hours | 8 to 12 months |
| Baby IIMs | 88 to 92 overall | 2 to 3 hours | 6 to 9 months |
The Post-IIM Career Trajectory
What an IIM PGP graduate's career looks like across 10 years post-MBA.
- Year 1-2 post-IIM: Analyst at consulting or BFSI, or Associate at IB. Rs 22 to 35 LPA at IIMA/B/C tier.
- Year 3-5: Senior Analyst or Manager. Rs 35 to 50 LPA. Common exit decision point.
- Year 5-7: Senior Manager or Associate. Rs 50 to 80 LPA. Many move to product or startup roles.
- Year 8-10: Director or Vice President. Rs 80 LPA to Rs 1.5 Cr at top firms.
- Year 10-plus: Director, Partner, or C-suite track. Rs 1.5 Cr-plus.
Honest Gaps in This Guide
- NIRF 2026 rankings had not been published at the time of writing. NIRF 2025 is the most recent official list.
- IIM fees update annually. The 2026 numbers here reflect the latest official admissions information; verify on individual IIM portals before applying.
- Median package figures are from 2024-25 placement reports. Top decile and bottom decile can differ sharply from median; some Baby IIM cohorts have wider variance.
IIM vs ISB vs Top Private Tier-1 (Final Comparison)
| Factor | IIM A/B/C (PGP) | ISB PGP (1-year) | FMS Delhi MBA | XLRI Jamshedpur |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duration | 2 years residential | 1 year residential | 2 years residential | 2 years residential |
| Fee (approx) | Rs 25 to 30 lakh | Rs 40 lakh | Rs 2 lakh (subsidised, govt) | Rs 25 to 28 lakh |
| CAT or GMAT | CAT 99-plus | GMAT 700-plus or GRE | CAT 99-plus | XAT 96-plus |
| Median placement | Rs 28 to 33 LPA | Rs 35 to 40 LPA | Rs 30 to 35 LPA | Rs 28 to 32 LPA |
| Strongest sector | Consulting, BFSI (IIMC) | Pan-sector | Marketing, Government PSU | HR (XLRI HRM) |
| ROI for fresher | Strong (high outcome) | Strong (1 year saves time) | Strongest (low fee) | Strong (HR niche dominance) |
FMS Delhi at Rs 2 lakh fee is the highest ROI tier-1 MBA in India if you can secure admission (CAT 99-plus, less than 200 seats). ISB's 1-year format saves time but costs Rs 40 lakh. IIM PGP is the benchmark across all dimensions.
IIM PGP vs IIM Executive vs Online MBA: Quick Picker
- 0 to 2 years of work experience, target consulting or IB: IIM PGP at A/B/C.
- 0 to 2 years, target management general: Any IIM Old or New tier acceptable.
- 3 to 5 years, want IIM brand but cannot leave job: IIM Ahmedabad BPGP or IIM K EPGP (blended).
- 5-plus years, target senior management: IIM B EPGP (residential, 1 year).
- Any experience, budget under Rs 3 lakh, target promotion or lateral move: UGC-DEB online MBA from NMIMS, JAIN, Amity, or Manipal Jaipur.
The right IIM is the highest-ranked one you can get into that has a strong alumni presence in your target sector and geography. NIRF alone is not the answer. The brand opens doors; the sector specialisation and geographic alumni cluster determine how far the doors actually open. Pick the combination of brand plus sector plus geography, not just the rank line on a list.

Frequently Asked Questions
IIM Ahmedabad has ranked NIRF Management 1 for multiple consecutive years and remains India's most prestigious management institution. IIM Bangalore (typically NIRF 2) and IIM Calcutta (NIRF 3 or 4) are the closest competitors. The "Big 3" of IIMA, IIMB, and IIMC consistently feature in Financial Times Top 50 global MBA programmes.
There are 21 IIMs in India as of 2026. The newest addition was IIM Mumbai (originally NITIE), which has already broken into NIRF Management Top 10 in 2025. IIM Guwahati and additional baby IIMs may be added in future cycles per Ministry of Education plans.
BLACKI is the colloquial acronym for the six oldest and traditionally most prestigious IIMs: IIM Bangalore (B), IIM Lucknow (L), IIM Ahmedabad (A), IIM Calcutta (C), IIM Kozhikode (K), and IIM Indore (I). All six are consistently in NIRF Management Top 10 and carry the strongest brand recall among Indian recruiters.
IIMA requires 99-plus overall CAT percentile combined with 99-plus in each section (VARC, DILR, QA). Academic record (10th, 12th, graduation), work experience, gender diversity, and academic discipline diversity also factor into final selection. The CAT score alone does not guarantee admission; the final composite score determines the outcome.
IIM Calcutta is widely regarded as India's strongest IIM for finance and investment banking placement. Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and top private equity firms recruit heavily from IIMC. IIM Ahmedabad is second for finance plus the strongest for management consulting. IIM Bangalore is third for finance and strongest for tech and product roles.
Fees vary by IIM tier and programme. Big 3 (IIMA, IIMB, IIMC) PGP fee: Rs 24 to 30 lakh for the 2-year programme. Other Old IIMs (L, K, I): Rs 20 to 27 lakh. New IIMs (Shillong, Rohtak, Ranchi, Raipur, Tiruchirappalli, Udaipur, Kashipur, Visakhapatnam): Rs 15 to 22 lakh. Baby IIMs (Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Nagpur, Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Mumbai): Rs 14 to 20 lakh.
Generally yes for IIM brand value alone. Even Baby IIMs typically place at Rs 14 to 20 LPA median, comparable to or better than tier-2 private MBA programmes (KJ Somaiya, Great Lakes, IFIM, Welingkar). Trade-off: smaller alumni networks, less developed industry connections, lower top decile salaries. For pure brand-value-on-CV decisions, even a Baby IIM beats most tier-2 privates.
