- ✓Can I do graduation online in India?
- ✓Who is eligible for an online bachelor's degree?
- ✓Is a one-year online bachelor's degree valid in India?
You can earn a valid bachelor's degree online in India after Class 12, while working or from a town with no college nearby. The choice is narrower than ads suggest, and some offers are not degrees at all.
Short answer: online graduation in India means an online BA, B.Com, BBA or BCA, and in a few places a BSc, from a university UGC has entitled for that programme in Online mode. Anyone who has passed Class 12, including through open schooling, is eligible under the UGC UG and PG Regulations, 2025. The degree usually takes three years, the same as on campus, and a valid online degree is equivalent to a regular one. One-year bachelor's "degrees", online B.Tech and online fine arts degrees are not UGC-valid.
- Degrees: BA, B.Com, BBA, BCA, and a little BSc
- Eligibility: Class 12 pass, formal or open schooling, or equivalent
- Duration: the same credits and minimum duration as the campus degree
- Not available online: B.Tech, LLB, nursing, pharmacy, fine arts and other prohibited disciplines
- Validity: equivalent to the regular degree when the programme is UGC-entitled

Who is eligible for online graduation?
The UGC (Minimum Standards of Instruction for the Grant of Undergraduate Degree and Postgraduate Degree) Regulations, 2025 say a student who has passed Class 12, through formal schooling or the open school system, or its equivalent, is eligible for an undergraduate programme. That matters for working adults and NIOS students, who are often told otherwise.
The same regulations let you cross streams. Whatever subjects you took in Class 12, you can join any UG discipline if you qualify the national or university-level entrance exam for it, and universities may offer bridge courses. Most online UG programmes admit without an entrance test and set their own subject and marks conditions instead. Check the university's eligibility page before you pay.
Is a one-year online bachelor's degree valid?
No. Under the UGC 2020 regulations, a university must offer online programmes with the same total credits and minimum duration as the corresponding campus programme. A bachelor's degree is usually three years. A course that promises a bachelor's in one year, or a degree "without exams", is not a UGC online degree, however it is advertised.
A real online bachelor's takes as long as a campus one. Anything faster is selling a certificate.
Can you study computer science, engineering or fine arts online?
- Computer science: yes, through a BCA. It is the main online route into software careers at UG level. An online BSc in computer science is rare because UGC does not allow online programmes that need laboratory work.
- Engineering (B.Tech): no. UGC prohibits engineering in ODL and Online mode.
- Fine arts (BFA): no. Visual Arts is on UGC's prohibited list for ODL and Online mode.
- Law (LLB), nursing, pharmacy, hotel management: also prohibited online.

Three-year or four-year online bachelor's?
The 2025 regulations recognise a 3-year bachelor's (120 credits) and a 4-year bachelor's with Honours or Honours with Research (160 credits). The four-year route has one concrete benefit for online learners. A UGC circular of 28 July 2026 allows a one-year online master's, but only for students with a four-year Honours degree. Ask whether your university offers the four-year option online before you enrol, because a three-year graduate goes on to the usual two-year master's. See our guide to online master's courses for what comes next.
How does studying for an online bachelor's work?
Lectures and material are delivered through the university's learning platform, and each semester ends in a proctored exam, written remotely under webcam supervision or at a test centre. The exam carries at least 70 per cent of the marks. Read how online degree exams work before you start.
Online degrees admit twice a year, in sessions beginning January to February and July to August, so missing one intake does not cost a year. See how the January and July intakes work. Before admission you also need a DEB ID, created from your ABC/APAAR ID; our DEB ID guide walks through it.
Is an online bachelor's degree accepted for jobs?
An online degree from an entitled programme is treated as equivalent to the conventional degree under Regulation 22 of the 2020 regulations, and each degree is uploaded to the National Academic Depository so employers can verify it.
