"Online diploma" covers everything from a two-year postgraduate diploma to a weekend certificate. Only some of them are qualifications UGC or AICTE allow online. Here is which, with the register entries for 2026-27.
Short answer: UGC's online entitlement covers degrees and two-year postgraduate diplomas. For the 2026-27 session, the UGC-DEB programme register lists eight online PG diplomas at two universities, Amity University and Visvesvaraya Technological University. Engineering diplomas cannot run online or by distance under AICTE rules. Diplomas after Class 10 and short certificate courses sit outside UGC-DEB entitlement, so check them with the body that awards them.

Which diplomas does UGC allow online?
UGC's notice F.No. 1-34/2024 (DEB-I) of 11 November 2024 states what its ODL and Online Regulations cover: degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level and postgraduate diplomas of two years' duration. So the diploma that a university can be entitled to offer online is a two-year postgraduate diploma, and only in a discipline that is not on UGC's prohibited list.
Online PG diplomas entitled for 2026-27

Another 18 postgraduate diploma entries for 2026-27 are in distance (ODL) mode. Entitlements are granted by session, so check the register for the session you are applying to.
If a "diploma" is not a two-year PG diploma in the UGC-DEB register, UGC online entitlement does not cover it.
Can you do an engineering diploma online?
No. AICTE's Approval Process Handbook 2024-2027 states, in clause 5.1(b) of its chapter on distance and online learning, that the Council shall not allow Open and Distance Learning at diploma, degree or postgraduate degree level in Engineering and Technology, among other fields. UGC separately lists engineering among the disciplines prohibited in online mode. That rules out a valid online diploma in civil, mechanical or electrical engineering. What about diplomas after Class 10?
Diplomas you join after Class 10, such as polytechnic diplomas, are not part of UGC-DEB online entitlement. Engineering diplomas at this level fall under the AICTE bar above. For any other diploma after Class 10, ask which board or council awards it and check its recognition with that body before you pay.
PG diploma or PGDM?
They are different qualifications. The PG diplomas above are awarded by universities under UGC-DEB entitlement. A PGDM is awarded by an AICTE-approved standalone institute, and it can run online only with AICTE approval for that mode. Our online PGDM guide explains the AICTE conditions.
Certificate courses
Short online courses and professional certifications, such as Six Sigma or software certifications, are not UGC-entitled degrees or diplomas. They can still be useful, but their value depends on the body that issues them and how employers in your field view it, not on UGC.

- Ask what it is: a two-year PG diploma, a PGDM, a diploma after Class 10, or a certificate.
