HR Is the One Function Where the Degree Is Nearly a Licence
Most of the time we argue that an MBA is oversold. Here is a case where the opposite is closer to true.
Human resources is unusual because the people who hire HR staff are themselves overwhelmingly management postgraduates, and the function trades in exactly the credentials it screens for. An HR generalist without a management qualification hits a filter earlier and harder than a salesperson or an engineer does.
That is not a claim that the degree teaches you the job. It is a claim about how the function recruits, which is a different and more useful thing to know before you spend money.
The Most Crowded Label in the Indian Online Market
Human Resource Management is carried by 77 universities in our index. That is the highest count of any MBA specialisation we track, ahead of Finance at 74 and Marketing at 62.
Think about what that means as a buyer. Seventy-seven sellers with the same three words on the product. The label cannot differentiate anything, so a brochure that leads with the specialisation name is telling you nothing at all.
What does differentiate: the accreditation status of the awarding university, whether the programme is entitled for online mode in your intake session, and what the elective list actually contains.
| University | Exact label | What we could verify |
|---|---|---|
| Symbiosis School for Online and Digital Learning | Human Resource | NAAC A++, valid to December 2029. NIRF Management category rank 11. |
| NMIMS Online | Human Resource Management | NAAC A++, valid to June 2032. NIRF Management category rank 24. |
| Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Online | Human Resource Management | NAAC A++, valid to August 2028. NIRF Management category rank 26. |
| Jamia Millia Islamia Online | Human Resource Management | NAAC A++, valid to December 2028. NIRF Management category rank 28. |
| Lovely Professional University Online | Human Resource Management | NAAC A++, valid to August 2030. NIRF Management category rank 44. |
| Amity University Online | Human Resource Analytics | NAAC A+, valid to December 2027. NIRF Management category rank 49. The only HR analytics label in our index. |
| Sharda University Online | Strategic Human Resource Management | NAAC A+, valid to January 2030. No NIRF Management placement on record. |
| MAHE Online | Human Resource Management | NAAC A++, valid to May 2029. NIRF Management category rank 39. |
NIRF publishes separate tables per category, and Management is the relevant one for a management degree. Several institutions with excellent university-category positions have no Management placement at all, which is worth knowing before you read a brochure rank as an endorsement of the business school.
The Two Labels Worth Noticing
Out of 77 HR programmes, two carry something other than the generic name, and both point at where the function is actually going.
Amity University Online is the only university in our index with a Human Resource Analytics label. Sharda University Online is the only one with Strategic Human Resource Management. Whether either is taught well is a separate question you answer from the curriculum, but the labels are at least aimed at the two directions HR work is moving: measurement, and a seat in business planning.
What the Degree Changes for an HR Executive
The move most HR people are trying to make is from processing to partnering. From running payroll inputs, attendance and onboarding paperwork, to sitting with a business head and arguing about headcount, structure and cost.
That transition is gated three ways, and a degree helps with two of them.
The eligibility gate is the obvious one. HR business partner and HR manager postings commonly name a postgraduate management qualification, and screening systems enforce it before a human reads your experience.
The credibility gate is subtler. A business head takes a conversation about attrition cost more seriously when the person opening it can also talk about the cost line it sits on. Coursework in finance and operations does more for your standing in that room than any HR paper will.
The third gate is evidence, and no degree supplies it. You need one piece of work where you changed a number: attrition in a specific function, a hiring cycle time, a restructuring you executed. Start building that now, in parallel, because the degree without it reads as theory.
What to Look for in the Curriculum
Make them send you the semester-wise curriculum. In an HR specialisation, four things separate a serious programme from a relabelled general management degree.
Whether Indian labour law is taught as its own paper, because compliance work is where HR careers are actually made or broken. Whether compensation and benefits is a full paper with real arithmetic rather than a chapter.
Then whether there is any quantitative HR content at all, which is the direction the function is moving. And whether the programme includes a project you can point at your own organisation.
A programme with no labour law paper is selling you something other than an HR qualification, whatever the transcript says.
A Note on the Awkward Part
You may end up screening candidates against a qualification standard you are simultaneously studying to meet. Several HR professionals have raised this with us and it is a fair thing to feel odd about.
The practical answer: get the mode question right for yourself. Know which register to check, know that entitlement is granted per programme and per session, and keep your own evidence. It makes you better at the verification part of your job, and it removes the one thing anyone could reasonably question.

When to Skip It
You are already an HR business partner with a track record. The degree adds less than another delivered restructuring will.
You want to specialise narrowly in payroll, compliance or talent acquisition operations. Those pay on depth and tooling, and a targeted certification is the cheaper instrument.
Your employer scores nothing for qualifications in its own progression framework. You can read that document. You probably administer it.
Final Word
HR is the function where an online MBA comes closest to being a requirement rather than an advantage, and that is precisely why the specialisation label is worthless as a signal. Seventy-seven universities carry it.
So pick on the awarding university's verified accreditation, on entitlement for your intake session, and on whether the curriculum contains labour law and real compensation arithmetic. Then go and change one number at work, because that is the part the degree cannot do for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
In HR the case is stronger than in most functions. The people who hire HR staff are themselves overwhelmingly management postgraduates, and the function screens for exactly the credentials it trades in, so a generalist without a management qualification hits a filter earlier than a salesperson or engineer would. That is a point about how HR recruits rather than about what the degree teaches, but it is the more useful thing to know before paying.
There is no single answer, and the specialisation label cannot help you because 77 universities in our index carry Human Resource Management, the highest count of any MBA specialisation we track. Since the label cannot differentiate, decide on three things instead: the awarding university's NAAC grade with its validity date, whether the programme is entitled for online mode in your intake session, and what the elective list contains. Compare those on verified public data rather than on brochures.
Ask for the semester-wise curriculum in writing and look for four things. Indian labour law taught as its own paper, because compliance is where HR careers are made or broken. Compensation and benefits as a full paper with real arithmetic rather than a chapter. Some quantitative or analytics content, since that is where the function is moving. And a project component you can aim at your own organisation. A programme with no labour law paper is not really an HR qualification.
It clears two of the three gates. The eligibility gate is real: HR business partner and manager postings commonly name a postgraduate management qualification and screening systems enforce it. The credibility gate is subtler, and coursework in finance and operations does more for your standing with a business head than any HR paper will. The third gate is evidence, and no degree supplies it. You need one piece of work where you moved a number, such as attrition in a specific function or hiring cycle time.
Barely. Amity University Online is the only university in our index carrying a Human Resource Analytics label, and Sharda University Online is the only one carrying Strategic Human Resource Management. Everything else sits under the generic name. Whether either is taught well is a separate question you answer from the semester-wise curriculum, but if you want an analytics slant in HR, the supply is extremely thin and worth checking directly with the university.
A degree from a university entitled by the UGC Distance Education Bureau to offer that programme in online mode, for the session you joined, holds the same standing as a conventional degree for employment and further study. Entitlement is granted per programme and per session, not to a university permanently. Check your exact programme and intake year on the register at deb.ugc.ac.in, which carries a mode column, and keep the evidence. As an HR professional you will later administer this same verification for others.
Depends on the direction. If you want to go deep in payroll, compliance or talent acquisition operations, those roles pay on depth and tooling and a targeted certification is cheaper and faster. If you want to move from processing into business partnering and eventually HR leadership, the degree clears eligibility gates that certifications do not touch, and it is the route the function's own hiring managers recognise. Many people do the certification first and the degree when the partnering move comes into view.
