The Conversation That Starts Every Enrolment
You are six to ten years into an IT services or product career. The technical work is comfortable. The next band looks like it needs something you do not have, and someone has told you that something is an MBA.
Before you spend two years and a significant sum, it is worth separating three questions that usually get asked as one. Does an MBA move you up? Does it move you across? Does it move you out? The answers are different, and only one of them is mostly yes.
How Promotion Actually Works in Indian IT
Large IT services firms run structured career frameworks with defined bands, role expectations and internal assessment processes. Movement up a band typically requires demonstrated scope, an internal nomination or assessment, a rating history and a business case for the headcount at the higher band.
Notice what is absent from that list. Academic qualification appears in hiring criteria far more often than in internal promotion criteria, because internally your employer already has years of evidence about you and does not need a proxy.
This is the structural reason the MBA-for-promotion story disappoints people. The degree is a signalling instrument, and signalling matters most where information is scarce. Inside your own firm, information about you is abundant.
Where the Degree Genuinely Bites
The lane change from individual contributor to management. Moving from senior engineer to a delivery, programme or product management track is a change of function, not a change of level. Your technical record is weak evidence for a function you have not performed, and a management qualification is one of the few pieces of evidence you can acquire in advance.
Business-facing and client-facing roles. Pre-sales, solution consulting, engagement management and account roles sit closer to the commercial side. They recruit partly on commercial literacy, and an MBA supplies the vocabulary and the framework.
External moves. Outside your firm your internal band means little and your qualifications mean more. This is where an MBA does its clearest work, and it is the reason to buy one even if your current employer will not reward it.
Eligibility filters. Some roles and many graduate-scheme style programmes specify a postgraduate qualification. A filter is binary and no amount of technical depth clears it.
The Mode Trap in Background Verification
This is the part IT professionals get wrong more than any other group, because IT hiring runs the most thorough background verification of any large Indian sector.
Indian higher education has three delivery modes: regular on-campus, distance, and online. Online mode is governed by the UGC Distance Education Bureau, and entitlement to run a programme in online mode is granted to a specific university, for a specific programme, for a specific academic session.
A background verification vendor will check whether your university was entitled to offer that programme in that mode in your year. If the answer is no, you have a problem that surfaces at your next job change, not at graduation.
The related question people ask is whether an online MBA is treated as equivalent to a full-time one. For recognition purposes a UGC-entitled online degree holds the same standing as a conventional one. For hiring preference purposes, some employers and some roles still favour full-time programmes, and no regulation changes a hiring manager's preference. Both of those statements are true at once.
Which Specialisations Suit an IT Career
Three broad directions make sense, and one common choice usually does not.

Ask three questions before enrolling. Are lectures recorded, so a missed live session is recoverable? Are examinations remotely proctored or centre-based? Are assessment deadlines fixed calendar dates or flexible windows?
A programme with recorded lectures, remote proctoring and flexible submission windows is a different product from one with mandatory live attendance and centre examinations, even if the syllabus is identical.

When You Should Not Do It
If your goal is a higher band in your current firm within eighteen months, the degree is the slow instrument. Scope, visible ownership and an internal nomination move faster.
If you want to go deeper technically, an MBA is the wrong direction entirely and a technical postgraduate route serves you better.
If you cannot answer the question "what job do I want that I cannot apply for today", you are buying a credential before you have identified the lock it opens. Wait until you can name the role.
