Searching for an online MSW turns up dozens of colleges. UGC-DEB's own register is much shorter: five universities are entitled to offer the Master of Social Work online for the 2026-27 session. Here they are, and how to check one yourself.
Short answer: Yes, an online MSW is valid in India when the university is UGC-DEB entitled for it in online mode for your session. For the 2026-27 July session, the UGC-DEB programme register lists five universities entitled for the MSW online: Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Integral University, Parul University, Amity University and the University of Lucknow. Another 29 universities, including IGNOU, offer the MSW by distance (ODL), which is a different entitlement.

Which universities offer an online MSW for 2026-27?
The UGC-DEB HEI programme register records each entitlement by year, session and mode. These are the Master of Social Work entries marked Online for 2026-27:

Because online entitlements are granted by session, the list can change. Mizoram University and IGNOU were listed for an online MSW in 2025-26 but are not among the online entries for 2026-27. Check the register for the session you are applying to.
An MSW listed for "Open and Distance Learning" is not an online MSW. The mode column decides it.
Online MSW or distance MSW: what is the difference?
UGC treats them as separate entitlements under the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020. Online mode is delivered over the internet, with online exams, and you can enrol from anywhere. Distance (ODL) mode relies on study material and contact sessions, and the university must run admissions, contact programmes and exams within its territorial jurisdiction.
Twenty-nine universities are entitled for the MSW in ODL mode for 2026-27, including IGNOU, Karnataka State Open University, Tamil Nadu Open University and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University. If you want a distance MSW, check that the university's territory covers where you live.
Is an online MSW valid for jobs?
Yes, when the entitlement covers your session. Social work is not among the disciplines UGC prohibits in online mode, and Regulation 22 of the 2020 regulations treats an entitled online degree as equivalent to a campus degree.
