Is Mangalayatan University Online Fake or Legit? A Real Degree With a Thinner Record Than the Badges Suggest

Mangalayatan is one of the cheapest UGC-DEB entitled online degrees in India, and cheap makes people suspicious. That suspicion is worth taking seriously, so this page answers it with records rather than reassurance.

The short version: it is a real university created by a state Act, and the degree is valid. Three specifics deserve your attention before you pay, and no page currently ranking for this question mentions any of them.

The A+ is first cycle, and that changes what it tells you

Mangalayatan holds NAAC A+ with a CGPA of 3.34. The grade was awarded in March 2023 and runs to March 2030. The A+ band covers 3.26 to 3.50, so 3.34 sits comfortably inside it rather than scraping the floor. That is a decent grade and I am not going to talk it down.

What matters more is the word cycle. This was Mangalayatan's first NAAC assessment, seventeen years after the university was founded in 2006.

A first-cycle grade is a snapshot. A fourth-cycle grade is a track record. When a university has been assessed four times across two decades, you can see whether it improved, held steady or slipped. With one cycle you get a single reading and nothing to compare it against.

This is not a warning. Every accredited university had a first cycle once. It simply means the grade carries less history than a number alone suggests, and the honest question to ask is what the second cycle shows when it lands.

It takes part in NIRF. It holds no rank.

This is the part most likely to be misrepresented to you, and the distinction is genuinely useful.

Mangalayatan submits data to NIRF. Its own website hosts the submission documents for the Overall, Pharmacy and Management categories going back several years. Submitting is a real thing universities do and it takes effort.

Submitting is not the same as being ranked. NIRF publishes ranks for institutions that place, and rank bands for a wider set below that. Mangalayatan's own NIRF page publishes the submission files and states no rank and no band for any year in any category. Our records show no NIRF position for it either.

I found aggregator pages quoting a band for Mangalayatan. I could not confirm one from NIRF or from the university's own disclosure. Until you can see it on nirfindia.org yourself, treat any Mangalayatan ranking claim as unsupported.

An absent rank is not evidence of a bad university. Hundreds of legitimate Indian universities never place. But it does mean NIRF gives you nothing to compare Mangalayatan against, and anyone implying otherwise is selling.

There are two Mangalayatan universities

Check which one you are applying to. This is not a trick question, and it is easy to get wrong.

Mangalayatan University, Aligarh sits in Uttar Pradesh and was created by a Uttar Pradesh Act in 2006. Mangalayatan University, Jabalpur sits in Madhya Pradesh and was created under a Madhya Pradesh private university Act notified in 2019. Two states, two legislatures, two separate legal creations carrying the same name.

The UGC-DEB entitlement discussed on this page, and the NAAC A+ at 3.34, belong to the Aligarh entity. Do not assume a record you read about one applies to the other. If a prospectus, an advertisement or an agent is vague about which campus awards your certificate, make them put it in writing before you pay.

Entitlement is per programme, not per university

People read "UGC-DEB approved" as a property of the university. It is not. Entitlement is granted for named programmes, for named intake sessions.

Mangalayatan is entitled across a broad set including BBA, BCA, M.Com, MA, MBA, MCA and MSc. That is a wide catalogue and it is genuinely useful at this price point.

But a university can market a programme that sits outside its current entitled list, usually through drift rather than deceit, and the person selling to you will not know the difference. So do not check whether Mangalayatan is approved. Check whether the exact programme you are buying, for the exact session you are joining, is on the list. That takes two minutes and it is the only check that actually protects you.

Verify Mangalayatan yourself in four minutes

Four checks, four official sites, no logins.

One. Open deb.ugc.ac.in, find Mangalayatan University on the entitled list, confirm the mode column says Online, and confirm your programme is named against it.

Two. Open naac.gov.in and confirm the A+ grade, the CGPA of 3.34 and the validity window. Note the cycle number while you are there.

Three. Open nirfindia.org and search the categories. If you cannot find a rank, there is not one, whatever a comparison site told you.

Four. Open ugc.gov.in, search the notices archive for the university name, and check the list of institutions declared fake. Mangalayatan does not appear on that list, and now you will have confirmed it yourself instead of taking my word.

Who should apply, and who should not

Mangalayatan suits you if price is your binding constraint and you need a UGC-DEB entitled degree that will stand up for employment, government recruitment and further study. On that specific job it does the work, and it does it for a fraction of what the well-known names charge.

It suits you less if the name on the certificate has to carry weight in an interview. It is a young state private university with one accreditation cycle and no NIRF position. Recruiters outside Uttar Pradesh may not recognise it at all, and no amount of correct paperwork changes that.

So be honest with yourself about which of those two things you are buying. If you need the qualification, this is a rational choice. If you need the brand, spend more elsewhere or do not spend at all.

Final word

Mangalayatan is legitimate. It was created by an Act of a state legislature, it is UGC entitled, it is NAAC accredited at A+, and its online programmes sit on the UGC-DEB list. Nothing here should be read as a warning against it.

What I would push back on is the marketing. A first-cycle accreditation and no NIRF rank is a thinner record than the badges on a landing page imply, and the honest way to buy this degree is with clear eyes about what it is: a valid, inexpensive, lightly-credentialed qualification from a young university. For a lot of people that is exactly the right purchase. Just make it deliberately.
