Search for an online BFA and you will find many course pages. Very few of them are degrees UGC recognises in online mode. Here is what the UGC-DEB register says about fine arts for 2026-27, and the routes that do lead to a valid qualification.

Short answer: no university is UGC-DEB entitled to award a BFA or MFA online for the 2026-27 July session. The register lists none in online mode for 2024-25, 2025-26 or 2026-27. Fine arts degrees exist only in distance (ODL) mode, at Yogi Vemana University, Annamalai University and IGNOU.

If you want a creative degree fully online, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, is entitled for online MAs in animation, graphic design and multimedia.

Online BFA in one box (checked 3 November 2026)
  • Online BFA or MFA, 2024-25 to 2026-27: none on the register
  • Distance (ODL) BFA, 2026-27: Yogi Vemana University, Annamalai University
  • Distance (ODL) MFA, 2026-27: Annamalai University, IGNOU (Painting)
  • Online creative MAs, 2026-27: Animation, Graphic Design, Multimedia at Mahatma Gandhi University
  • Rule on practical work online: Regulation 4(C)(ii), UGC ODL and Online Regulations, 2020

Is any university UGC-entitled for an online BFA?

No. The UGC-DEB HEI programme register records each entitlement by year, session and mode. Across the three most recent sessions, every Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts and drawing and painting entry carries the distance (ODL) mode. None is marked Online.

The register does not give reasons. The relevant rule is Regulation 4(C)(ii) of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020. It prohibits online delivery of any programme that requires practical or laboratory work as a curricular requirement, except where the practical part is limited to programming and coding, including software tools.

A fine arts degree is built around studio practice.

A course page that says "online BFA" is not an entitlement. Only the mode column in the UGC-DEB register decides it.

Which universities offer fine arts by distance for 2026-27?

These are the fine arts entries in the register for the 2026-27 July session, all in distance (ODL) mode:

UniversityType, stateProgrammes (as named in the register)
Yogi Vemana UniversityState University, Andhra PradeshBachelor of Fine Arts (Hons), 4 years
Annamalai UniversityState University, Tamil NaduBFA in Music (Vocal, Veena, Violin, Mridangam) and Dance (Bharathanatyam); MFA in Music (Vocal, Veena, Violin) and Dance (Bharathanatyam)
IGNOUCentral Open University, DelhiMaster of Fine Arts (Painting)
Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramoday VishwavidyalayaState University, Madhya PradeshMaster of Arts (Drawing and Painting)
Choudhary Charan Singh UniversityState University, Uttar PradeshBA with drawing and painting or music among the subject options

Distance mode is not online mode. In ODL, the university runs admissions, contact classes and exams within its territorial jurisdiction, using study material and learner support centres. Check that the university's jurisdiction covers where you live before you apply.

Our explainer on what online education means under UGC rules sets out both modes side by side.

Watch for "online BFA" offers. If a university or agent offers an online BFA or MFA, ask for the UGC-DEB entitlement in online mode for your session before you pay. As of 3 November 2026, the register lists none.

For 2026-27, the register lists Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, for three creative master's degrees in online mode: an MA in Animation, an MA in Graphic Design and an MA in Multimedia. They are design and media degrees, not fine arts degrees, and they need a bachelor's degree first.

At undergraduate level, the 2026-27 register lists no online bachelor's degree named for fine arts, design or animation. A general online BA is the nearest entitled option. Our guide to online bachelor's and UG courses in India lists what is available.

If you are still in Class 12, our guide to courses after 12th arts covers campus fine arts routes too.

Are online art certificates worth anything?

A certificate can teach a skill, but it is not a degree. UGC-entitled universities may run certificate and diploma programmes, and our guide to online diploma courses in India explains how those work.

Treat any certificate as a skill credential, not as a substitute for a BFA where a job or further study asks for the degree.

How to check a fine arts programme yourself

  1. Open the HEI programme list on deb.ugc.ac.in.
  2. Search for the university and find the fine arts row.
  3. Check the year (2026-27), the session (July) and the mode column: Online or Open and Distance Learning.
  4. Create your DEB ID before you enrol.

Our step-by-step guide on how to check UGC-DEB approval walks through each field. Fees change each session, so check the current fee on the official portal before you apply.
