Bengaluru has more universities than most Indian cities, and several of them now teach online. A working professional in the city can study online with a local university or with any online-entitled university in India. Here is what Bengaluru's universities are entitled to offer online for 2026-27.

Short answer: for the 2026-27 July session, the UGC-DEB programme register lists online programmes at six universities based in Bengaluru, holding 47 online programme entries between them: JAIN (11), Bangalore University (10), Christ (9), REVA University (9), Dayananda Sagar University (5) and Alliance University (3). Across Karnataka, 15 universities hold 110 online entries.

  • Their online programme entries: 47
  • Karnataka as a whole: 15 universities, 110 online entries
  • Studying with a university outside Bengaluru: allowed for online mode, Regulation 23(4)
  • Same value as campus? Yes, Regulation 22 of the UGC ODL and Online Regulations, 2020

Which Bangalore universities offer online degrees for 2026-27?

The UGC-DEB HEI programme register records each entitlement by year, session and mode. These are the entries marked Online for universities based in Bengaluru, with programme names shortened from the register:

UniversityUndergraduate (online)Postgraduate (online)
JAIN (Deemed-to-be University)BBA, BCA, B.ComMBA, MCA, M.Com, MA in English, Economics, Journalism and Mass Communication, Public Policy, and Jainology, Comparative Religion and Philosophy
Bangalore UniversityB.Com (General)M.Com (General), M.Sc (Mathematics), MA in Economics, English, History, Sociology, Political Science, Hindi and Kannada
Christ (Deemed to be University)BBA, BCA, B.ComMCA, M.Com, MA (Applied Economics), MA (English with Communication Studies), M.Sc (Data Science), M.Sc (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning)
REVA UniversityBCA, BBA (Finance and Banking)MCA, MBA in six dual-specialisation combinations (finance with international business, marketing, operations, HR or business analytics; HR with marketing)
Dayananda Sagar UniversityBBA, BCA, B.Com (General)MBA, MCA
Alliance UniversityBBA, B.Com (Hons) General, 4 yearsMBA

REVA's MBA appears as six register rows, one per specialisation pair, which is why its entry count is high for two programmes. Count programmes, not rows, when you compare universities.

An entitlement means a university may admit you online for that session. It does not tell you whether the batch is open, so ask before you plan around a start date.

What about the rest of Karnataka?

Nine more Karnataka universities hold online entries for 2026-27. Visvesvaraya Technological University (13), the University of Mysore (12), Manipal Academy of Higher Education (10) and Karnataka State Open University (10) have the largest lists. Yenepoya (6), Srinivas University (5), JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (3), St Aloysius (3) and Adichunchanagiri University (1) follow.

Because online mode has no territorial limit, a learner in Bengaluru can join any of these, or any online-entitled university in another state. Our pillar on online degree courses in India sorts the national list by programme.

Online or distance: which one fits a Bangalore student?

UGC treats online and distance (ODL) as separate entitlements under the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020. Online mode is delivered over the internet with online or proctored exams.

In distance mode, the university runs admissions, contact classes and exams within its territorial jurisdiction, using study material and learner support centres.

For a working professional with a fixed office schedule, online mode usually removes the need to travel for contact classes. Our explainer on what online education means under UGC rules sets out both modes side by side.

If you are looking at the MBA by distance specifically, see our guide to distance MBA options in Bangalore.

Engineering and lab-based degrees cannot be taken online. Several Bengaluru universities are known for engineering. UGC's public notice of 11 November 2024 prohibits engineering in online and distance mode, so an "online B.Tech" offer from any of them is not a UGC-entitled degree.

Are online degrees from Bangalore universities valid?

Yes, when the entitlement covers your programme and session. Regulation 22 of the 2020 regulations treats an entitled online degree as equivalent to the same degree earned on campus. Regulation 23(2) protects your admission if the university loses entitlement in a later year.

Fees change each session and differ by university. Check the current fee on each university's official portal and keep the written fee schedule with your admission receipt.

How to check a Bangalore university's online programme

  1. Open the HEI programme list on deb.ugc.ac.in.
  2. Search for the university.
  3. Find the exact programme and check the year (2026-27), the session (July) and the mode column.
  4. Create your DEB ID before you enrol.

Our step-by-step guide on how to check UGC-DEB approval walks through each field of the register.
