  • ✓What do I get after one year of an undergraduate programme?

"Graduate in one year" is a common promise in online education ads. UGC's regulations do not allow a one-year bachelor's degree, online or on campus. They do allow a few things that sound similar: a slightly faster degree, a certificate after one year and a one-year master's for some graduates.

Here is what each rule says.

Short answer: no, you cannot earn a UGC-recognised online bachelor's degree in one year. The UGC UG and PG Regulations, 2025 set an undergraduate degree at 3 or 4 years, and the UGC ODL and Online Regulations, 2020 require online programmes to keep the same credits and minimum duration as the campus version.

The fastest legal route is an accelerated degree, which shortens a 3-year degree by at most one semester. One year of study earns an undergraduate certificate, not a degree.

One-year degrees in one box (checked 3 November 2026)
  • Undergraduate degree duration: 3 or 4 years, clause 11.0, UG and PG Regulations, 2025
  • Online and distance programmes: same credits and minimum duration as campus, Regulation 13(A)(4), 2020
  • Fastest 3-year degree: five semesters, under the accelerated degree programme
  • After one year of study: a UG certificate (40 credits plus a 4-credit skill course)
  • One-year master's: allowed after a 4-year Honours degree, clause 11.5

What do the UGC regulations say about degree duration?

Two sets of regulations decide it. Clause 11.0 of the UGC (Minimum Standards of Instruction for the Grant of Undergraduate Degree and Postgraduate Degree) Regulations, 2025 says the duration of an undergraduate degree shall be either 3 or 4 years. A postgraduate degree is normally 1 or 2 years.

For online and distance study, Regulation 13(A)(4) of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 says a university must keep total credits and minimum duration the same as the corresponding campus programme.

Regulation 13(A)(2) sets the maximum duration at double the minimum. So an online BA takes at least as long as a campus BA.

Online study changes where and how you learn. It does not change how many credits or years the degree needs.

Annexure I of the 2025 regulations creates the Accelerated Degree Programme (ADP). It applies only at undergraduate level. You follow the same syllabus and earn the same total credits, but you take more credits each semester and finish sooner.

  • How much faster: a 3-year degree can be shortened by at most one semester, to five semesters. A 4-year degree can be shortened by one or two semesters.
  • When you choose: at the end of the first or second semester, not later. A committee at the university judges your credit-completing potential from your results.
  • How many seats: a university may earmark up to 10% of its sanctioned intake for ADP.
  • Your degree: it carries a note that the requirements were completed in a shortened duration. Recruiters, including UPSC and state service commissions, should treat it on par with a standard degree.

Annexure I is optional for universities, and the register does not show which online programmes run an ADP. Ask the university in writing before you count on finishing early. The same annexure also allows an Extended Degree Programme, which stretches a degree by up to two semesters for students who need more time.

What does one year of study earn you?

Under clause 11.1 of the 2025 regulations, a student who earns 40 credits and exits after the first year receives an undergraduate certificate, provided they have also completed a 4-credit skill-enhancement course. After two years and 80 credits, the award is an undergraduate diploma. Neither is a degree.

You can come back later. The regulations let a student rejoin the second year before the credits expire, within a maximum of seven years, with credits held in the Academic Bank of Credits. Clause 6.0(2) adds that an online UG certificate, diploma or degree must be pursued only with a university UGC recognises for that mode.

Our explainer on the UGC-DEB ID covers how your online credits are tracked.

Treat "BA in one year" offers with care. A general bachelor's degree finished in one year does not match the 3 or 4 year duration in the 2025 regulations. Before you pay, check the programme in the UGC-DEB register for your session and mode, and ask the university in writing how the duration meets UGC rules. Our list of UGC-declared fake universities shows how to spot an unrecognised awarding body.

Is a one-year master's degree allowed?

Yes, for the right students. Clause 11.5 of the 2025 regulations lets universities offer a 1-year postgraduate programme to students who hold a 4-year undergraduate degree with Honours or Honours with Research. A student with a 3-year degree is eligible for the 2-year postgraduate programme.

Check the duration of any online master's on the university portal, and which undergraduate degree it expects. Our guide to online master's and PG courses in India explains the options. For the MBA specifically, our explainer on the 1-year MBA and executive MBA covers the short MBA formats.

Are there any one-year programmes on the UGC-DEB register?

Very few. Searching the 2026-27 register for programmes marked "1 year duration" returns two entries, both at the University of Delhi in distance (ODL) mode: a Bachelor of Library Science and a Master of Library and Information Science.

Both are professional library science programmes, not general bachelor's degrees. Our guide to online library science courses lists the online options.

What are the faster legitimate routes?

  • Accelerated degree: finish a 3-year degree in five semesters, where the university offers ADP.
  • Two programmes at once: UGC allows two academic programmes simultaneously in set combinations. Our guide to the UGC rules on two degrees at the same time explains how.
  • A shorter qualification: a UG certificate or a diploma, if you need a credential now and the degree later.
